Sustainability Innovation Challenge 2023

The Sustainability Innovation Challenge is an annual competition which invites Accenture teams from around the world to address some of the world’s most critical environmental and social issues.

Through a competition and accelerator program, our people design and develop market-ready solutions, gathering insights and feedback from leaders in the private sector, nonprofit and academic space.

In its third year, nearly 1,000 ideas were submitted across three challenge themes: Future of Nature & Biodiversity, Future of Sustainable Systems & Industries, and Future of Equity & Human Wellbeing.

The winning teams will bring their ideas to life through our Social Innovators Accelerator. Watch the video to learn more about this year’s challenge.

Each solution addresses one of three innovation areas sponsored by a client and supported by our global network of innovation centers to maximize impact. Congratulations to the winning teams!

Future of nature and biodiversity

Mangrovera.ai: A platform to continuously monitor mangrove carbon sequestration through remote sensing, using AI to better predict future sequestration. Designed for enterprises, conservation organizations and local communities to increase the survival rate of certain sub-species.

Future of sustainable systems and industries

SAMMA: A tool for organizations in equipment asset intensive industries to receive a Strengths – Weaknesses – Opportunities – Threats (SWOT) analysis for their assets and a clear, prioritized plan to improve their sustainable asset management.

Future of equity and human wellbeing

Personalized pain therapy app: A mobile app offering a unique combination of psychological pain management techniques (color-, music-, light-, relaxation-therapy, hypnosis) to provide neurolinguistic re-programming to relieve pain at an affordable cost and increase equitable access to this form of care.

We are grateful to the more than 30 cross-sector Innovation Partners from around the world who helped shape the challenge, judge ideas and provide mentorship to finalist teams.

Eco volunteering

Our people served as “citizen scientists” to support environmental research.

Using the online platform Zooniverse, they helped researchers track changes in the environment by classifying animal behaviors, such as counting penguins in Antarctica, identifying elusive wildlife species in the Serengeti and classifying Beluga whales in Canada.

Through the GLOBE Observer app, they tracked their observations on clouds and helped researchers interpret satellite data that is key to their environmental research.

Making climate-smart choices

During our “eco season,” from Earth Day through World Environment Day, Accenture people also engaged in a challenge to take daily eco actions to help reduce their own individual footprint.

For this challenge, we collaborated with Count Us In, which aims to mobilize one billion people to act sustainably over the next decade. Daily eco actions included shopping locally, reducing electricity consumption at home and committing to waste-free and meatless days.
