I was privileged to attend an extremely simple, yet insightful session on leadership by Mr. Vijay Sethi at the CIO&Leader conference as an ITNext100 Future CIO awardee. He shared 5 mantra's which essentially are integral for building the basic character for being a good leader. 1. Have good work ethics 2. Always have a positive attitude. 3. Nurture & inspire our teams 4. Focus on regularly enhancing our knowledge 5. Be a good human being. All of the above is nothing, if the leader does not demonstrate integrity, he said. One thing that resonated with me the most was his statement - "Good leaders do not create followers, they create more good leaders.". This statement brought back memories of my first tryst with formal leadership education when as a beginner in my professional journey I read the book, Good to Great - Jim Collins, where the author talks about Level 5 leadership who channelize their energies to build successors for their organizations. Something which had become a benchmark of my perspective of good leadership ever since. Creating perpetual organizations which transcend individuals. Of course, Mr. Vijay was talking about building good leaders at societal and business community level, which transcends organizations. As Dr. Prashun Dutta shared in his insights, it is our duty to repay the debt to society by contributing back and enabling others to become good leaders. All in all, a memorable and insightful weekend, where stalwarts took us back to first principles. GCCs are perhaps, the most secure places for careers and innovation. Pravin Goel and Debasis Panda through this McKinsey Talks Operations episode, share their ideas and vision for GCC's success in creating capabilities (aka innovations), their prime objective for being a GCC! As an HR person, who has been part of a few GCCs in last 2 decades, find it very assuring and comforting when tech leaders talk about "talent", "leading by purpose", "telling and not instructing", "context and not content", "hire for capability and deploy for skills", lack of visibility into internal talent landscape and so sticking to "skill-maps", "scouting for talent at T-school Campuses through "HackKnight" and other such hackathons, "Understanding Gen Z" and their basic needs for job stability and financial security, etc. "talent marketplace", "co-locating" meaty projects, "all roads go through managers", they key to disseminating culture and driving execution, "talent retention, etc. Very inspiring vision and a display for leadership by purpose and for "talent", for "innovation," etc.! Key question is: How do you innovate? How do you build capabilities vis a vis local talent (mostly hunted from other GCCs)? How do you contribute to the talent landscape around you, from where you hire and lose to in India? What percentage of your HQ GCC talent co-locate to India GCC to give a sense of culture of innovation and the toolkit and capabilities that other developed and mature GCCs of the firm have already in place? How do you measure and benchmark India GCC talent vs your Global/HQ GCC talent in terms of their skills, successes, multi-dimensional growth to various roles and not just being a skill ninja? How do you exchange talent through mobility across global GCCs to bring leading practices to new and infant GCCs? What Global Talent Practices for career advancements and Fast-track have you brought to India GCCs. How do you create opportunities for talent at India GCCs to compete on "RealThons" to know where Indian talent stands against those in your mature GCCs at HQ, etc. I am sure GCCs in India must be doing all these and more. Just wanted to say that a true GCC vs a 100% subsidiary of an MNC in India are two very different concepts. Enjoy the podcast. I had tremendous learning from listening to these two veterans. The year-end data gave some insights into the direction the emerging #startup hubs are heading. Especially #Hyderabad. 1️⃣ Number of deals closed over past 10 yrs in #Hyd is 384, Pune is 382 and Chennai is 379. 2️⃣ The total amount raised in the past 10 Yrs in Hyd is $3B (Avg deal size $7.8M), while #Pune and #Chennai are at $4.7B (Avg deal size $12.3M)each. But here it where it gets interesting 3️⃣ For #2024 Hyd raised $296M in 46 deals (Avg $6.43M), Pune did $439M in 33 deals (Avg $13.3M), Chennai did $472M in 27 deals (Avg $17.5M) So for Chennai and Pune while the deal size got larger in 2024 compared to the 10-year Avg. *For Hyd the deal size actually shrunk*. Key Learnings 1️⃣ The higher number of deals in Hyd compared to other emerging hubs indicates that there are good investible startups. And investors are taking early bets in them. 2️⃣ However, the reduction in deal size indicates that startups need to step up their #scale game to move to the next stage. There seems to be a dire need for an intervention by the #ecosystem to support startups in the post-seed stage. I think it is about time for us to have a super-focused Y Comb-styled #accelerator #program of our own. Funded and run by startup #founders who have at least raised a series-B Would love to have some suggestions and inputs from ecosystem stakeholders if such an intervention is relevant. One can be in any profession during the working stint, many of the leadership traits / lessons are in common. Being a cricket fanatic & follower, witnessed KKR register their 3rd IPL title. Here are few lessons I was able to envision: 1) Be passive by giving opportunities to each team member to get the best out, not 1 person can independently star in every win. Virat piled up 750+ runs, saved on at least 150+ runs, still his team ended on losing side 2) There will be off days for sure at work / cricket field. Best is to take a stock of the gap areas, apply the same and ensure its not replicated. KKR was on a losing side despite making 230 or 240+ score once, SRH could not learn from their mistakes during final stages, hence ended on losing side 3) Over-confidence due to presence of big names not every time the success mantra. MI did everything right except playing well 4) A no ball on field is like a client escalation. Follow up with a yorker, or get blown out for a 100+ m sixer 5) Being truly vested in the armory of team members will ultimately reap the benefits of success. There may be roadblocks at the start, but trust & empathy will win you the race. KKR was a quick learner and truly invincible in this 6) Fight till the end. I have to quote this even though this came in the last season. Rinku Singh with his 5 sixes to win a game for KKR changed the mindset of the team. The new captain & coach then re-purposes & fits people in the right positions and they win them the trophy What are some of your leadership lessons?
