What the webinar is about This report brings together a range of new and existing evidence about the value of financial conversations and the implications for people’s financial wellbeing. Money is one of the last great taboos, with many finding it hard to talk about their financial concerns. Yet having conversations about money can support individuals to make better financial decisions, improve their financial resilience, and ensure those with money problems get help sooner. At a time when more than a quarter of UK adults are suffering low financial resilience and many more are feeling financially squeezed, the need for good conversations about money that support people’s resilience has never been greater. The Pension Protection Fund today released its 19th edition of the Purple Book - the most comprehensive data and analysis of the UK defined benefit pension landscape. Broadstone's Head of Consulting & Actuarial Nigel Jones spoke to Professional Pensions about what the 2024 edition tells us about the universe of DB schemes. He discussed funding levels, allocations to bonds and investment in UK equities as some of the major top-level trends to emerge from the report. An important report by Schroders and the Pensions Management Institute has been published today. The report, Lifetime Savings Initiative: A vision for success and self-sufficiency, was developed with an expert panel including representation from TPR. Great discussion on what Jersey needs to do to become a technologically advanced economy at Policy Centre meeting this morning.  Thanks to Tony Moretta, Pete Wild, David Wyatt and Tom Hacquoil for insightful opening comments and to Alan Merry and Kate Wright for facilitating. Key points to come from the discussion – ·      Technology is the only industry capable of matching finance in terms of economic value to the Island. But it is not prioritised. ·      There is still an assumption that that talented people want to come to Jersey.  They don’t.  Other countries incentive talented people to settle because of the contribution they can make in respect of employment and tax revenue.  Jersey still erects barriers. ·      Tech companies rely heavily on informal networking; a good network attracts more talent.  Jersey does not have that network. ·      Parts of what Jersey has to offer are very good – safe and attractive place in which to live, legal system, finance industry, some infrastructure and the Jersey Private Funds mechanism. ·      However, the processes for forming a company and opening a bank account are unreasonably slow. ·      Subjecting tech companies to money laundering provisions is unduly onerous and unnecessary and a barrier to business. ·      The education system needs to prioritise digital skills; currently this is largely done outside the school system by Digital Jersey. Jersey Government needs to take on board these points and engage more effectively with business.
